Superb, utterly romantic, unsigned, bearing evidence of a long-ago sale through Christie’s, and in its original British frame (Newcomb’s don’t you know old chap), this ferociously charming genre painting of damnably attractive peasants celebrating life among their chalk cave dwellings overlooking, say, Seville, could not be more Victorian. It must have sold immediately before the paint was even dry and brightened the gloomy drawing room of some Liverpool magnate. Or perhaps his smoking room. The good lady wife might not have appreciated how pretty the girls were and how sparkling their eyes.
Damn fine painting, in any case. Framed, 38 x 28, art 30 x 20.
