Born in New York City and a long-time resident of California, Joseph Greenbaum (1864-1940)  became a portrait painter of prominent persons and landscape subjects .

When he was age 13, he moved to San Francisco where he studied at the School of Design.  He then studied in Munich, Germany at the Royal Academy of Fine Art with Carl von Marr, and in Paris at the Academie Julian with Jules Lefebvre, Robert Fleury, and H Zugel, famous animal painter.
