Oil on canvas depicting a Benedictine Monk in his habit. His left hand rests on a skull, that familiar memento mori, and his left points to an open book, most certainly devotional. An arresting face. Relined and reframed in the 19th century in London. Tags are still present on back. Painting appears to be much older than the 1700s, but without testing the pigments it is hard to tell. From a distinguished old California family in Bel Air.
