Born in St. Louis, Channing Smith (1906-1984) studied art at the Corcoran School in Washington, D.C. and the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, followed by independent study in Paris. He earned a degree in drama in 1954 from the University of Arizona, where he later taught.

In addition to painting the local landscape, Smith designed stage sets for drama productions and made many marvelous woodcut prints. These woodblocks, printed on a turn of the century press on heavily textured paper, garnered Smith considerable acclaim. He also painted numerous portraits.

Smith was a respected member of the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild. (Eric Firestone Gallery)
