F. Martinez Lais Mexican Girl Holding a Hen Oil On Canvas 1940s P654

Acquired from the original owner’s estate, known to have been purchased in the forties, signed F. Martinez Lais. We think it’s a knockout, a touch surrealist, slightly cartoonish and triumphantly Mexican-identified, modern-folkloric in the manner only a Mexican painter can pull off, this little peasant girl exerts a lot of power, seen from above, standing out sharply from the blood red background, one hand rendered in a mesmerizing green,┬áher purple hair bow echoed in the the pink ribbon around the chicken’s neck. This artist is unknown to us and we want to see a lot more of his work. In its original hand carved frame.

Art measures : Canvas 20″ x 24.5″, frame 25″ x 28.5″
