Salvador Corona Folk Art Box M586 SOLD

Bullfighter turned folk artist Salvador Corona (1895-1990) achieved considerable renown not only as a painter but also for these exquisite boxes depicting an 18th century Spanish Colonial paradise of his own imagining. They spawned an industry, but none of his successors succeeded in duplicating the inventive imagination and sheer life of his originals.  Close in spirit to Indian or Persian miniatures his depictions of elaborately gowned ladies and elegant gallants inhabit an eternal landscape of gardens and villas that caught the imagination of the mid-century modernists who collected him.
