Walt Lee (1888-1980) never stopped painting. In his last years impaired mobility forced an inspired choice: he revisited scenes of his youth: old sketches and paintings became the jumping off points for his new canvases, the intensity of the original experiences and observations returning undiminished in the new works. This glorious 1976 canvas was based on a work from 1932. And, as always. Walt Lee saw things a little differently: this desert scene is full of rain. He was, to the end. though studio-bound, still outdoors, painting from life: his life.
